Psalm 139: 7 Where can I go from your spirit?
Or where can I flee from your presence?
8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there;
if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there.
9 If I take the wings of the morning
and settle at the farthest limits of the sea,
10 even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me fast.
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
Peace, love and grace to you.
Where can I go from your Spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? What a phenomenal question to ponder. Where can I go where God Spirit is not?
Well, for starters you may respond with the morgue or cemetery, or the penitentiary or places of extreme poverty. The cancer ward, war zones or any place in the midst of a horrific disaster, caused by forces of nature or the evil of humans. For the self-righteous, perhaps you will answer the neighborhood bar, the club or the casino.
However, there is an understanding expressed in the words of the Psalmist and the life of Jesus. The understanding is there is nowhere we can go, no place we can enter, no territory in which we can cross where God is NOT. God is!
For the longest time, I believed and even taught we had to create the right conditions for God to show up. We had to say the precise words, practice the perfect piety, purely scour our hearts and souls, wear the correct robe with the appropriate color of the church season, have the exact candle length, sing the highest praise and then, and only then God will show up! The presence of the Lord is here but it isn't over there.
Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from God's presence? The psalmist found the answer to be - nowhere can you flee from God because God is everywhere. If I fly up God's there, if I fall down God's there, if I travel to the ends of the earth, God's there The gospel of Jesus proclaims the same thing - in a mangy manger in Bethlehem God is there, in a loaf of bread and cup of wine God is there, in the suffering and pain of the cross God is there, in a borrowed tomb immersed in death - GOD IS THERE!
God is not dependent on people to create the proper factors for God to exist but with eyes of faith and hope we can see through situations to trust God is there. Take the time to notice in your day to day living - the presence of the Lord is here, always here.
Love, Pastor G
