Peace Beyond Peace

Philippians 4: 6 Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Dear Friends,

Grace, peace and love to you in Jesus name.

Have you ever been in one of those stormy situations where you received a difficult diagnosis, a strained relationship, loss of employment, yet despite reality there was a real peace resting within and upon you? Had a moment when others behave like Chicken Little shouting, "The sky is falling," and you are just as calm as a breezeless sea?

Welcome to the presence of God's peace.

Peace is not so much what we do but who God fully is. From the very beginning of God's story in the creation there was peace or shalom. Shalom was found in the purity and perfection of nature. Shalom was found in the evening walks God would take in the garden among the plants, animals and people. Peace was found in the wholeness, completeness and togetherness of all God made.

For this reason brokenness works to destroy shalom. Brokenness in the human family, the environment, our relationships works against God's plan for peace to rule. The season of Advent becomes the perfect time to cultivate God's peace internally and externally; in our own essence and in the essential people and places around us. Soon we will celebrate the birth of the Prince of Peace and we are invited to let the same Spirit be birthed in our lives.

We can cultivate God's peace through daily prayer, steady scripture study, honoring the Sabbath day, serving others, building authentic relationships and giving of ourselves. God's peace is given from God, so we may live our lives to the fullest, free of fear and hate.

God's peace is truly a peace which passes all understanding! There are many difficult times I have faced but somehow there was a peace guided me through. But guess what? I don't have to understand how peace comes to us when we know who brings peace to our living. God does!

Love, Pastor G
